Raleigh Round Island Challenge - Swim Assessment Update

Posted by Poh-E in

Trying to keep a confident face on, I couldn't help but tremble as I started my warm-up session. Then, with the feeling of nervousness swirling around my system like a stabbed rat, I walked towards the pool and readied myself for the start.

It was time for our swim assessment, and god knows what challenge lied ahead. Not quite the actual round island challenge but the pressure is still on us to prove our worth on the team. Here we go.

The chill from the ice-cold pool shot up my spine like a bolt of lighting, for a moment my hands felt numb as if the blood from my very being is shying away from the task. At this point coach Hafiz had already blown his whistle several times, waving his hands, telling me to kick start the 2 kilometer course. So off I went, still trying to shake off the goosebumps.

1 kilometer in, I was already feeling the fatigue in my thighs. I slowed down my pace, hoping the second kilometer was going to be easier.

It wasn't.

By the time I have reached 1.5 kilometers I was constantly being overtaken by more capable swimmers, and my feet were at the brink of cramping up. But I seemed to have underestimated my willpower. Suppressing the agony in my shoulders and thighs, I finished the course in 45 minutes, a respectable time considering my swimming ability before I started training.

Well, it's about 2 weeks away from the big swim. Bring it on.

Hey You! Join us in the Staff Dream Team for IW May 2013!

Posted by Poh-E in

You have been on an IW.

You have been on a Raleigh Expedition.

Yes, you miss the serene jungle. You miss the sound of gushing river water. You miss waking up to the sound of birds and bugs. You dream of falling asleep to a blanket of stars.  And yes, of course you miss having a cup of tea boiled over the ever-comforting firewood…

On top of all that, you actually really miss hanging out, catching up, pondering about life with wacky, unpredictable, crazy, super spontaneous Raleigh-ians from all generations of Raleigh KL!

IW May 2013 is back.

You are back too. With – a – Responsibility.

Whether you have been staff for the nth time, you have not been staff before. You should be STAFF-ED!

If you are an old timer, this is the usual list of roles and responsibilities:
  • Camp Team
You are so important that without you and the team, all staff will be hungry, AND… angry! You are responsible to up keep the campsite, to make sure that everyone has a shelter over their head, have enough water to drink, and have a dry surface to sleep on. What’s more? You will also be able to wear a facilitator hat during the IW!

  • Logistics Team
Without you, the whole IW will not function. That’s it, doomed.
All equipment and tools need to be cleaned after the IW, and you will be able to organise a team of people for a massive gotong-royong session. You will also be organising recce sessions to make sure everything goes as planned. Sound exciting enough? Yes! You will be able to wear the facilitator hat too.

  • Friday (6pm – 9pm) and Sunday Team (6pm – 9pm)
If you need to study for an exam, have a deadline to meet, run a marathon, take care of the cat over the weekend, why not come by to RMC and spend a few hours helping out? You will be the master of multi-tasking, there are various planned and unplanned task for you to manage –this will surely hone your adaptability to perform on last minute request!Besides, you will get to meet with familiar faces and enthusiastic new faces too!

  • Medic Team
We always have a hard time looking for a full medic team. So if you are one, please kindly register, will you? Medic as self-explanatory it is, you will be responsible to all medical issues pertaining to all staff and participants. You will need to have certified first aid knowledge for this position. You will also be part of the facilitator team during IW.

  • Game facilitators
This is the essence of Raleigh. You know it. If you want to be part of this amazing team, do sign up for this role, and together we should learn and share more. Training sessions will be organised and you will want to attend this training, because it is a training with a Twist, and you will walk away with new interesting ideas and perhaps a new-found interest in facilitation too!

  • Coordinators
Ex-Venturers, you either hate this or love it. Whichever is your pick, you know you will have a good time, with your Co-Coord guiding a new team of young people. This is a start of a new journey, for many of them, and what’s better than that you are part of their amazing life-changing story?

  • Trailblazers
You are responsible to scout for a trail. Exciting, yes? And we won’t leave you out, you will also be part of the facilitation team family!

  • Public Relations / Marketing
You will do your best to recruit, recruit, recruit! You get the word out by drafting press release, convincing editors to publish the event,  checking out more online resources to tell more young people about this IW. Definitely a good skill to learn or polish.

You will have food, shelter, be transported, learn lots of lessons and have a marvelous good time. I’m sure it is worth RM15 for the whole weekend, right? We will collect the staff fees on Friday evening.

So when is this IW exactly, right?

Date: 31 May (6pm) – 2 June (8pm)
IW Staff Training 1: 28 April, Sunday (10am – 1pm)
IW Staff Training 2: 18 May, Saturday (10am – 1pm)

To sign up as a staff member for IW May 2013, please fill up the form here: http://bit.ly/17onAds

Positions for each team are limited, so do fill up the form fast! Fast, fast, fast! Deadline will be at 11.59pm, 26 April 2013.

Lastly,

We all have time limitation, and are often busy. Busy as you may be, if Passion triumphs over “busy”, then you should be able to spend sometime to:
  1.  Be in an IW
  2.  Help to share our amazing news about expeditionand IW for the next 2 months
  3.  Invite your cousin, friends, anak buah, close relative, distant family, colleagues, pasar aunty’s daughter to IW. Two ways: IW May 2013 Facebook Event Link or Call me.
  4. Provide advice, suggestions and possibly executing it on your not-so-busy time?

With love and thanks,
Kar Lye
