Mozzies, Sandflies or Leeches?

Posted by Poh-E in

Judging by the entries about Tiger Balm and remedies for insect bites on the chatbox at the website, I'm guessing that you had a memorable and fun time.. to say the least! The oldies got to relive their expedition moments and the newbies were introduced to life on one...Raleigh-style of course!

But, like what Yen from 04B said in the chatbox, on expedition sandfly/mozzie bites are the least of your worries. Spray some DEET (insect repellent) or most effective is to crawl into the safety zone of your mozzie net and you'll be fine.

But the LEECHES...Euughhh.. I have an intolerable fear of leeches, worms, frogs or anything slimy and lives im dark, damp places. Leeches are extremely gross as they keep wiggling and the way they crawl.. *shudders* And they're pretty darn fast crawlers too!

Oh and in Sabah they're HUGE! When i was in Maliau Basin for the Environment phase, those buggers were as big as my pinkie (and I have long fingers...)!!! They're extra EXTRA gross when they've had their fill of your blood!!!! AARGGhhhh!!! *shrieks and run*

There is an an expedition 'legend' that a MALE venturer who didn't realize he had a little visitor IN his most vulnerable groin area... It was only when he started to bleed and felt uncomfortable that he saw his lil visitor. here's the scarier part: Mr. Leech had to be pulled out and the area sterilized with alcohol!! The leech was INSIDE his family jewel!!!! How utterly digusting is that??!And eerrmm..inserting a cotton swab of alcohol to disinfect the bite.. OUCH.

So you see, mozzies and sandflies are OK for me. But leeches.... *shudders*

By the way, tell me what you think of IW. Even better send me your photographs and maybe a short story and I'll publish it on the blog! Email pr@raleighinternational.org.my.

Peace!

Is that even possible?? i cant imagine his panic and fear upon discovering it. It's not just a one off case tho. I have an expedition mate, who the leeches seem rather fond of that area of his.. gross. Did u know they can actually live up to 4 days without blood? I tried keeping a few as pets..Hey Leechy leechy ..HAHAHHAHA....

  4. They are actually quite lovely to play with. They can move pretty fast and you know... its like playing with ants. Except this one, when u squeeze and pull it, it won't die.. hahaa
I'm sure there are other venturers who did the same?? ANyone??

  5. Sounds interesting ;) Should have done that. Almost every leeches that we found were burnt to death. I'm not the one holding the lighter, yea.. =X I still have about 10 leech spots which I kept scratching after every 4 5 days or so.. the dead skin comes off easily and it's irresistable once started ;P Anyway, you're gonna regret to let go of the chance to go for expedition just because of leeches because you're gonna loose out on alot. It's more than just any camp experience. It's something totally so unexpectable and great that it can't be described with words. No one can ever understand Raleigh Expedition unless they have been to one. Go for it and you will never regret it. I'm missing my expedition and all those people I met there =/ Especially the one that just left Kay El 4pm just now ;(

  8. a tiger leech that had a taste of me got chopped into half with a parang and my blood *splat* everywhere! it was a bloody BIG fella. leech stories are synonymous with expedition & always a good ice breaker :D
beware that the itch from the bite will last & NEVER scratch it even though u cant resist it. too much scratching will get it infected & may turn into something nasty. which some venturers had to find it the hard way.
