May is finally here! And this time it’s all about experience where Raleigh KL gives you a sharing session led by an ex-venturer! Hear and see first hand how TWO people drove a self-built campervan “22oookms” across outback Australia in 8 months as part of their working holiday! Also, find out about travelling in a campervan living with Aboriginals for 6 weeks, plus tips for your own working holiday experience!!

What?
This May Monthly Meet is on a sharing session of how a Raleigh-ian has decided to try different things, travel differently, and dare to take the challenge after a Raleigh expedition....

Info: What is introduction weekend and the 10 weeks expedition about?
It is a camp where it'll mimic the life of a 10 weeks expedition and through this expedition you'll learn a sense of developing a heart for community work, enjoy a breath of jungle fresh air and with all of that you'll learn that you have grown inwardly.


Participation Fee:

Early Bird: RM 60/ participant (Till the 10 May)

Normal Rate: RM 75/ participant

(This fee will include accommodation, food and transportation for the weekend)

April Monthly Meet: Let’s Go Paddling!

Always wanted to do something fun? Feel like getting out there? Have a free weekend? Want to learn up a skill? And experience something adventurous? Think no more!

This April, Raleigh KL brings you a whole new outdoor experience with just a boat, a paddle, nature, and you! Come join us in April’s Monthly Meet with a Basic Canoeing Course at Titiwangsa Lake!

What? A Basic Canoeing Course with professional instructors, meeting and sharing sessions with your old and new Raleigh mates, lots of chatting and rowing, and this is also a fundraising event for Expedition 11D’s venturers.

When? 9th April 2011 (Saturday)

Where ? Taman Tasik Titiwangsa

Meeting Point? 7.30am SHARP at Titiwangsa Monorail Station (opposite Titiwangsa LRT station) or 8.00am at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa (for those who are going straight)

P/s: Please be there on time because late comers will have to risk a 5km walk to Taman Tasik Titiwangsa.

Agenda? 7.30am- Meet up + registration

8.00am- Ice breaking + meeting

9.00am- Kayaking Course

12.00pm- Light refreshments

1.00pm- Transfer back to Titiwangsa Monorail Station

What to bring? Extra clothes to change, cap, umbrella, lots of drinking water, and YOURSELF!

LET’S GET OUT THERE.

*Bravo IW Dec10 PIWP* Ice Cream for Charity

Eating ice cream has been one of the most awesome moments in most people’s life, it makes people happy, joyful, and forgets about stuff that has been bothering you.

Being too obsessed with the idea of giving and eating ice cream, Bravo team has decided to fundraise some money via car wash to buy delicious ice cream for underprivileged children, TO PUT A SMILE ON THEIR FACES.

So, this was what happened on 15 Jan – Fundraising Day/Car Wash Day. We have about 20 people, a bunch of people going houses to houses in USJ, door by door, asking the residents for car washing. And we are lucky that Bernard being such a great person offered his home for us to collect old newspaper and as a place to rest before getting out there and get more car washed.


As expected, we faced problems in getting people to have their cars washed by strangers. There were a lot of times when we asked 'is there any body home?', and silence is the only response! What makes it even funnier is there will be people who respond by shouting - “no body at home”, from inside the house.

Besides washing cars, we have also collected old newspaper, cardboards, clothes, shoes, bags and etc. Being so motivated, some of us even help an uncle to cut grass in his lawn by using scissors! ! !



Though it’s not easy wanting people let their car washed, we still managed to wash 20 cars, thanks for all the awesome volunteers who have worked so hard from morning till evening. Throughout the day, we fundraised RM1035, far from what we targeted. More than enough for us to buy ice cream! ! !

20 FEB 2011 – Ice Cream Distribution in House Of Joy, Puchong




Out of surprised, we managed to get The Last Polka, one of the best home made ice cream maker in KL to sponsor us 90 cups of ice cream worthed RM612.


The respond for this event was overwhelming as there are even more number of volunteers who joined us to distribute ice cream. As a result, the orphanage was overcrowded with people.




All the home made ice cream tastes so good, and it does put smiles on people’s face either volunteers or the kids. It’s ice cream that connect us and brighten our day.

Other than ice cream, the cool part about this orphanage visit was that we enjoyed dancing with the kids, playing balloon and plasticine. And what surprised us was the kids are very good in dancing. They have practiced for dancing and natural in it.


At the end of day, it was the kids who have brighten us.



Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.

A Muddy Affair

That’s what you get when you bring together 37 passionate youths and a generous amount of mud! And even better, all that was done towards supporting a good cause. Without doubt, the Raleigh KL 1-Day Mudhut Community Project on January 9 was a good kick-start for this new year. For myself, and the other 36 youth volunteers who turned up.

I woke up several times the night before, so you could guess how excited I actually was! Personally, building houses was never my kind of thing, let alone a mudhut! That I’m sure goes out to most girls too. However, the involvement of MUD made the whole difference. It meant getting all dirty and messy, and oh yeah, I was definitely up for that!

The mudhut building site was located in a small, remote village in Kampung Cottage, Gombak. Apart from the bumpy road leading to the site, there was a deep sense of peace and serenity surrounding the village area. Basically, the Kampung Cottage consists of a farm run by Mr Ivan Ho, and the building of mudhut would be used for the benefit of the Orang Asli community. I was personally encouraged to hear that.
So, the volunteers met up with Pak Din, the caretaker of the farm, who also taught us on the process of making mud bricks. And trust me, it was not easy as it may sound! We started by collecting mud with the equipments we can get hold of. Cangkuls, spades, wheel barrows etc. Digging through the thick layer of mud and sand was energy-consuming, but at the same time, fun! We had mud flying all over the place, with of course, some targeted unexpectedly on our faces 
The next step was what I would call the MudFeet Therapy. This was where all the mud, sand, and coconut husks were mixed in a tub. And there’s no better way to mix them than using our feet! Therapeutic as it is, the whole process took almost an hour to achieve the right texture, which eventually led us to the final step. Moulding. It was relatively simple, as we had to put an appropriate amount of mud to fit the mould, in order to produce mud bricks. The bricks would then be left exposed to the sun to dry up the moisture which will take another 1 week or more, according to Pak Din.

By late afternoon, we were able to produce 27 mud bricks, which exceeded our initial target of 25. And those bricks would be used for building mudhuts in the future. Ah, such joy!

Being part of this whole experience has been amazing. An eye-opener, I’d say. I’ve seen how new friendships were built; embraced the beauty of team work; and enjoyed the pleasure of working with nature. At the end of the day, it’s more than just about getting dirty and having fun. Instead, it’s all about us choosing to make a difference today!
