Episode Hari Raya Treat at the LCCT: Expedition Venturer Send-off

Posted by Poh-E in

It was Hari Raya eve, we had to send some people back to Kampungs so we served them Ketupat and Lemang with Sambal...

at McDonald's LCCT

We invaded McD's LCCT early in the morning with our homecooked traditional cuisines....

Finally, no missing of flights, no illegal knife and fork, and no overweight baggage, the Venturers were set to fly off to The Land Below The Wind:

To Everyone, From Expedition

Dennis writes from the deep end of a hydro microelectric project at Kampung Buayan. Venturers of Sabah from earlier years may recall that as a village along the Crocker Range trekking trail.

Six of world's eight bear species could face extinction

Posted by Poh-E in ,

Sun bears, the world's smallest, are added to list due to poaching, logging

GENEVA - The world's smallest bear was added to a list of wildlife that could face extinction, joining five of the world's eight bear species already classified as in danger.

Experts with the World Conservation Union took the step of adding the sun bear, whose habitat stretches from India to Indonesia, because of deforestation and poaching in its Southeast Asian home.

The sun bear was classified as "vulnerable" — one step below "threatened" and two below "endangered."

We estimate that sun bears have declined by at least 30 percent over the past 30 years and continue to decline at this rate," said Rob Steinmetz, a bear expert with the Geneva-based group, which is known under its acronym IUCN.

The bear, which weighs between 90 and 130 pounds, is hunted for its bitter, green bile, which has long been used by Chinese traditional medicine practitioners to treat eye, liver and other ailments. Bear paws are also consumed as a delicacy.

Another threat comes from loggers, who are destroying the sun bear's habitat, Steinmetz said.

The re-assessment of the sun bear's situation will be reflected in IUCN's Red List of Threatened Species, a comprehensive inventory of some 41,000 species and subspecies compiled by a network of experts around the globe.

Venturers of the Raleigh expedition in 2006 will fondly remember the sun bear for visiting the Mengaris Camp at Danum Valley for several midnight snacks. At this world-renowned rainforest research and conservation area, Raleigh venturers have the opportunity to meet rare local animals in the wild as well as scientists from all over the globe. With special access through close cooperation with Sabah Parks, Raleigh venturers have in the past built infrastructure and assisted scientists in important field studies of the endemic flora and fauna.

Next year, Raleigh International will run three 10-week expeditions in Sabah, beginning February, July and October respectively. For more information and application forms email

Brief:Dear potential participants,

Ever fancied a life of adventure, discovery and excitement? Join a hundred strangers. Walk a hundred miles. With no change of socks. To sleep with bugs and bathe in streams. Would you give up the comforts of home in pursuit of a crazy dream?

Previous Raleigh International projects include building gravity feeds to supply fresh water to villages, building houses, schools, bridges and libraries; geological surveys, marine conservation work, working with rhinos & orang utans; as well as trekking across the Crocker Range, sea kayaking in Chile and trekking across some of the most arid parts of Namibia.

This year Raleigh International gives young Malaysians the opportunity to embark on life-changing expeditions to Malaysia, Costa Rica-Nicaragua, Namibia & India. These expeditions challenge young people, between the ages of 17 and 25 through community and conservation work in some of the world’s most remote destinations. Volunteers help build homes, community clinics and work with wildlife experts on some of the world’s most endangered species.

To qualify for an expedition as a Venturer, you have to be between 17-25 years of age, speak basic English and able to swim 200m unaided and qualify yourself at an Introduction Weekend. This Introduction Weekend is designed to simulate the rigors and challenges you will face on expedition. The details for the upcoming Introduction Weekend are as follows:

Dates: 6pm on Friday, 10 Oct to 4pm on Sunday, 12 Oct 2008
Rendezvous: International Youth Centre
(accessible by Bandar Tun Razak LRT. Map
