Team Alpha from Raleigh International KL's Jan'07 Introduction Weekend organized a mini sports carnival for Precious Kid’s Home located nearby the Assunta Hospital, PJ

The children of Precious Kid's Home with Team Alpha

After weeks of hard work raising funds for the event, finally we reached the amount that was needed. It was after much bickering among ourselves that we organized the schedule and activities for that day.

We headed off to Precious Kid’s Home at 8.30 a.m and arrived an hour later. Without further delay, we headed to the football field for a game of friendly football match between the coordinators and the children of Precious Kid’s Home. It wasn’t long before the children gained an upper hand and beat us 5-0. What a bummer!!

The football friendly between Team Alpha & the children

By 12.30 p.m, we concluded that we (coordinators) are terrible football players. Period. Fifteen minutes later, we gave up and headed back to the Precious Kid’s Home for a hearty lunch.

Lunch was a yummy dish of fried noodles. Our lunch feeding frenzy was our golden opportunity to socialize with the children of Precious Kid’s Home. We had long leisurely chats about all things under the sun; life, school, games especially football, etc...

Those children taught us a thing or two about life that day. They showed us a different perspective to life; a life seen, experienced and lived by the young orphans. It is endearing and touching to see how positive these children are despite losing their parents. We also realized how similar we all are, that we all have a common factor - the need to feel loved. Personally, I know this will be one of the most memorable lunchtime.

After our finger-licking meal, it was time for the long awaited indoor games. We introduced simple yet fun games that promoted teamwork like Tangle-Time, Goofy Theatre (commonly known as Charades), and Chap-Cali-Chap. We had an amazing time and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly, so much so that we lost track of time. Before we realized it, it was time to leave.

Filling the balloons with H2O

However, we did not leave before all of us were soaked from a water balloon match! Again, the children gained an upper hand as the coordinators were bombarded with water balloons before anyone could yell “GO”!

We left unwillingly from the home with a heavy heart but not before presenting a huge box of Ferrero Roche’s to Pastor Evelyn, the person in-charge of the Precious Kids’ Home as a token of appreciation.

Preparing to leave

To wind it up: All in all, although we were exhausted both physically and emotionally by the end of the day, it was well worth it. Who could forget the children’s innocence especially when they looked up expectantly when we first arrived or the hesitant look of a little one who refused to finish his lunch but whose face lit up when we offered to feed him. Their expressions of pure joy and happiness when we played games especially the ‘Attack of the Water Balloons’ is etched into our memories. The sweet memories we made and the new bonds of untainted friendship we forged that day are irreplaceable!
