Brief:Dear potential participants,

Ever fancied a life of adventure, discovery and excitement? Join a hundred strangers. Walk a hundred miles. With no change of socks. To sleep with bugs and bathe in streams. Would you give up the comforts of home in pursuit of a crazy dream?

Previous Raleigh International projects include building gravity feeds to supply fresh water to villages, building houses, schools, bridges and libraries; geological surveys, marine conservation work, working with rhinos & orang utans; as well as trekking across the Crocker Range, sea kayaking in Chile and trekking across some of the most arid parts of Namibia.

This year Raleigh International gives young Malaysians the opportunity to embark on life-changing expeditions to Malaysia, Costa Rica-Nicaragua, Namibia & Ghana. These expeditions challenge young people, between the ages of 17 and 25 through community and conservation work in some of the world’s most remote destinations. Volunteers help build homes, community clinics and work with wildlife experts on some of the world’s most endangered species.

To qualify for an expedition as a Venturer, you have to be between 17-25 years of age, speak basic English and able to swim 200m unaided and qualify yourself at an Introduction Weekend. This Introduction Weekend is designed to simulate the rigors and challenges you will face on expedition. The details for the upcoming Introduction Weekend are as follows:

Dates: 6pm on Friday, 17 August to 4pm on Sunday, 19 August 2007
Rendezvous: International Youth Centre

Caving at Tampin

Posted by Poh-E in

Rainforest trek . Caving adventure . River chill-out . Jungle camp

You can imagine a dark cave with lots of bats whizzing past and chilling water running above your body!! You need to squeeze and cram through small gaps and holes, and sometimes submerge through holes in the cave to make your way through, making this one of the most fun-filled caving activities available. This is what makes that experience really fun!

Ex-venturer and seasoned guide, Ahli Chung will lead us on a fascinating trail to the cave at the Mount Tampin Forest Reserve Track.

Date: 15-16 Sep 2007 (Sat & Sun)
Caving site: Gua Batu Maloi, near Tampin
Estimated cost: RM 50 per person for park fees & camping ground rental
Transport: Carpool
Limited to max 30 places
Latest date to confirm: 29 Aug 2007
Direct enquiries to info@raleighinternational.org.my

Konnichiwa from Kar Lye

Posted by Poh-E in

Venturer on the current 10-week Sabah programme, Kar Lye managed to abandon her mobile phone and find scraps of paper from the interiors of Borneo. She writes back to KL about expedition life and the largest Raleigh construction project she is currently working on.

This would be her sixth week on expedition with four more weeks to go. You can give Kar Lye a nudge at:

The other venturers on expedition, CK and Chii Chie, are all reachable with the same address (name change please!)

Check out Kar Lye's and CK's fundraising blogs.

Training on Coordination and Facilitation

Posted by Poh-E in ,

Dear IW staff and ex-IW participants,

There will be a training on Coordination and Facilitation skills conducted by Aishah & Aisalli. It is also open to all Raleigh members who are ex-IW participants. (You can sign up on the spot if you are not yet a member.)

Both Aishah and Aisalli are ex-venturers of the Oman and Sabah expeditions respectively. Aishah was previously with Outward Bound School for eight years while Aisalli has been a team trainer at a call centre for the past three years.

The training will be this Sunday, 12th of August, 8.30am to 12.00pm.
Followed by a trip for IW recee. We will be back in KL about 4.30pm.

The location for training will be at
Taman Tasik Perdana or Lake Gardens in KL.

How to get there?
The park is opposite Tugu Negara.

From Jalan Parlimen, the main road, turn right into Taman Tasik Perdana at the traffic lights. Turn right again immediately to Jalan Cenderamulia and follow the road until you see parking lots on your right hand side. There should be a hotel-like building which is the Kelab Taman Perdana Diraja. We will be meeting at the parking lots at 8.30 am sharp.

If you are taking the KTM, please stop at Bank Negara station. Do let me know before (call/sms) so that we can arrange for someone to pick you up at 8.15 am.

What to bring?
1) Plenty of water
2) Yourself
3) Shoes and comfortable clothes

To all the IW Staff. Thank you for volunteering your time to make IW August 07 a success...

To the rest. Please feel free to come and meet some new faces and catch up with older ones!

Thank you and see you all at 8.30am this Sunday.
