Where have you been?

Posted by Poh-E in

Been missing out on Raleigh KL events? Where have you been? Fret not, here's an update of the past projects:
First off, right after August Introduction Weekend (IW), teams were busy getting everyone back and finally making a decision on which project to work on for their Post-IW project.
Before I introduce you to all the brand new exciting projects, I will first guide you through a journey of one team, one year ago, one children's home, and one hope...

Then, the artwork came...

Finally the transformation of the 126 wall to....

Another amazing piece of artwork...

The mural.

Here's the link where you can find the complete "photo-journey" from fund raising till the end of the project. Want to know how Team Charlie IW September 2006 did all that, here - you- go.

Back to the more recent PIW projects, team Alpha have recently(20th October 2007) visited a shelter home for the homeless- Mercy Welfare Society in Taman Wahyu, Jinjang. In case you are wondering, they did not visit empty-handed they have raised a total amount of RM200+ to bring groceries along. Here are some of the snapshots for the day...

An all-time favourite card game was played and thoroughly enjoyed...

SNAP!!

And Checkers too...

Overall, the time there was well spent playing some classic card and board games. It is a different experience altogether visiting a home for the homeless, the experience has left us all pondering on Life itself-being lucky as we are now and having what we have. For further information and possible visit to the shelter home, be sure to log on to Mercy Welfare Society for contact details and featured articles.
The same Team Alpha has also paid a visit to the SPCA. Here's the story on how they peeled chicken (well, that's the food for the animal!).

Up next will be Team Charlie and their Lantern Festival Celebration at Angels Children's Home...
When they first reached...

After some warming up with the kids...

...Looks as though the kids have just discovered a new sport--The human rock climbing wall! Happy faces always give happy thoughts, ah... what magic kids can do.
Finally, the painters, and painter-watcher have completed the day's task...

Well done, Team Charlie, job well done for another amazing Post-Introduction Weekend project.
Also, now venturing and soul-searching Raleigh venturer Zhi Yong (who is still somewhere in the Sabah jungle...) has posted some pictures taken at Angels during the mixed-festival lantern painting activity. Check out for more info here. Feel free to write to them (Zhi Yong, Vincent, EeLaine, and Yen Jun) at:
(name)
Raleigh International
PO Box 14182

Sabah, Malaysia
It could be a pleasant surprise as when they are out in the jungle too long, the creative juices just will not stop flowing. Or, to remind yourselves on what they look like, you can also go to the official Sabah Autumn Expedition blogsite.

So guys and girls out there, once again, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? COME BACK! Yes, wherever you may be, make time for the much anticipated fun(muruku-back guarantee) Introduction Weekend that is happening very soon starting from the Merry day of 14th December and ending on the Jolly day of the 16th of December! Come as a participant, participant before? Come as a staff, staff... err... come as a staff again! This is your chance to once again (if you have missed) the chance to participate in RIKL projects!

Alpha's SPCA Visit

Posted by Poh-E in ,

Visit to SPCA

Hey, Alpha group recently paid a visit to SPCA on the 2nd of September.

This was not part of the project but just a way to meet up. We gathered at SPCA early in the morning of 2nd September. It wasnt very easy to find that place.

But really, you couldnt miss the smell. Phew... The odourless stench reeked the area, but we are Raleigh-ians, no smell could deter us! Yes, our first task was to de-bone chicken necks. Yup, we had to peel some flesh off the chicken necks that were cooked for the dogs. There were a couple of hundred of chicken necks there, all of which were once part of a larger body. Yes, we know its disgusting but OH WELL. And the worst part was when the handphone rang while we were peeling the necks. Actually that wasnt the worst, the worst part, which I am too embarassed to say but am saying anyway, was that the chicken necks actually smelled delicious. Yuck yuck, I've said enough! (We thought it was the worker's meal but it turned out it was for
the...you know who)

After that, we had the task of feeding the dogs, changing the bottom of the cages because the newspaper on the bottom of the cages act as diapers. And, there were ALOT of dogs.. I guess we now know how our moms used to feel. The puppies were sooooooooo cute but they poop
alot. Seriously cute. Sorry we didnt take any pictures.

Yup, we got the oppurtunity to play with the dogs. They are surprisingly very friendly and playful and naughty and cute and small and adorable (not like girls these days). One of them kept trying to stand by leaning its paws on us. Another was desperately prying for
attention and one was just running in imaginary circles.

The cats werent so cute.

Before we left, we met a lady who told us about the problems that SPCA faced. There was the problem where owners refuse to neutuer their dogs (that means disengaging their genital parts) and because of that a lot of puppies are forming everywhere. And on a typical month, there could be up to 200 dogs being sent to SPCA. Because of the lack of space, most of them are put to sleep (not on the bed, in the coffin). I have not inquired where the bodies are placed but will
ask in the future. And the cost of Spaying/ Neuteur is only RM50 !! Its that cheap! So bring your boyfriends and husbands along and GET it done!

And she too was complainign about the capturing of dogs by the MBPJ which was extremely cruel.

One lesson we learnt from the visit was about peace. You see, the dogs live side by side everyday all year round. And YET, when another dog tries to infiltrate or come near their cage, they would bark uncontrolbly and fiercely. Now, what exactly is their point of barking and fighting all the time? They are juxtaposed to each other, they cant escape anywhere, they wont win anything, and yet they cant seem to live peacefully. Come to think of it, are WE any different?

Finally, we had a cheap lunch, we smelled like dog pee and our mom's weren't very happy. So as a future warning to those who might want to go in the future, PLEASE BRING A CAMERA! THE PUPPIES ARE SOOOO CUTE!

Thank you!

Sincerely
John
Team Alpha PIW07
