Expedition Updates!

Posted by Poh-E in

It is time for expedition updates again!

Come this Tuesday (30th of September), 7 Venturers from KL will be embarking on a 10 week expedition 08H in Sabah!

Lots of fundraising, even more preparation (shopping, vaccination, among others...) On the 27th of September, which was just yesterday, the Venturers brave themselves to hike up Selangor's highest peak - Gunung Nuang. Meet up - 5 am, Start - 7.15am, Back to carpark - 4.30pm. Almost 10 hours of hiking with weights! Woah! *Clap clap* First time hiker, or experienced-hiker, we sure did enjoy the short wash at the river after the clay descent!

Here's a photo of us at Kem Pacat after hiking for hours walking the endless road and the steep red clay:

Great job guys!
Next up:

Ju Vern the Venturer who has returned from the Summer 08 Expedition has written an article and it's on today's (28th of Sept) BRATs.

Being thrown into a secluded area in Sabah with no telephone and Internet access for five weeks turned out to be one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences for me.

When I explained to my friends that I was participating as a venturer (youths aged 17-25) in a Raleigh Expedition in Sabah, many looked at me in disbelief and others some in awe.

Some of the questions I got were, “Isn’t it going to be difficult not being able to Facebook?”, “Wah, you cannot use your cellphone for five weeks?” and “No bed, no hot shower, no proper toilet, can survive or not?”

Amazing story there, Ju Vern!

Lastly,

Recently HK Reporters have visited the Raleigh project sites in Sabah during the Summer expedition. And here is the outcome:

Here's the translated summary:

Title: Prince William Dug Shithole!

This article was featured in Hong Kong Next Magazine 28/8/2008. The author introduced how Prince William was involved, as a Venturer, in Raleigh International, co- founded by Prince Charles.

The author of this article then described her experience volunteering as a Venturer in Sabah Expedition. She was fascinated by the animals in the wild, but struggled with mosquito bites. She also mentioned about the long-drop… REALLY LONG drop and how she missed her flushing toilet at home. She learnt to compromise when her teammates decided having peanut butter and crackers for dinner. Finally, the article ended with the author citing how easy things were in this world. After working hard and encouraging each other in her team, she realized life should not be too comfortable.

So... here ends the expedition update.
If you are new to all this, here are some questions for you:

Raleigh KL October Monthly Meeting

Posted by Poh-E in

**Updated on 29th of September**

Hey all,

Hope you're getting ready to attend the October Monthly meet on the
1st of next month. This email is to announce a change to the original
plan:

As you already know that we were to attend the PM's open house at
PWTC; unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, we wouldn't be
getting fed, as the PM is holding it in Kedah.

But fear not, fellow Raleighians; we're still having fun by heading
for Gabai Lagoon which is a waterfall with natural waterslide; so you guys need not scrap any plans of being elsewhere.

Another thing; meeting point is the same venue (KL Sentral airport departure section),but the time has been pushed back to 2pm. So be there...hopefully in time.

See you when I see you...

Regards,
Sharief

Hi Raleigh team..

It’s October Monthly Meeting around the corner and next monthly meet we are planning to ambush the Prime Minister..heheh…to his open house of course!!

Eid-ul-Fitr is a Muslim celebration that marks the end of Ramadhan, the fasting month. In Malaysia, Eid-ul-Fitr is known as Hari Raya Aidilfitri or simply Hari Raya. Although Hari Raya is celebrated by Muslims, the celebration in Malaysia is unique, as open house is to welcome friends from all walks of life and is seen as a symbol of unity among the multi-racial Malaysians as it is also enjoyed by fellow Malaysians of other religions and faiths. In conjunction with the auspicious event and in true Malaysian tradition of hospitality, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi will be hosting an open house and all of you are welcome..

TENTATIVE DETAILS are as below:

Date: 1st October 2008

Meeting time : 12 noon

Meeting location: KL Sentral

Fees Member : FOC

Non-Members: RM3 (for shared transport and coordination cost)

September Monthly Meet: visit our Vegetables

Posted by Poh-E in ,

this post is courtesy from a fellow member of Raleigh KL, YinkHeay
Here it goes:

I shall continue my weekend story before the next weekend comes.

As mentioned in my previous post, I went to a natural farm (Bandar Harapan) trip organized by Raleigh Kuala Lumpur last Saturday. And as mentioned, despite my low interests on gardening or farming, it brought back the long lost memories of my agriculture subject field trip in Second year in Monash. Same like the field trip, in this trip to the natural farm we got to touch, smell and even taste the leaves of the plants under the guidance of the person in charge, Ivan.

Tasty?

Not... (see Shih Chung's face)

Ivan giving explanation about how the soil indicator works

But I learned something extra during this trip as compared to the previous field trips. One of the interesting things is the garbage enzyme Ivan produced in big bulk through natural fermentation which when mixes with farm wastes and appropriate amount of water it can be treated as fertilizer.

Garbage enzyme

And, it was the first time I see people rear earthworms. Ivan made an earthworm nest by covering the patch of soil with a roof to make it shady and moist, ideal for earthworms to stay.

Baby earthworms

Not only earthworms Ivan rears. He also rears all sorts of insects and animals like frogs and crickets, which will help loosen the soil.

All sorts of insects and animals in the pots.

A frog staring at me when I took it's photo

Ivan also made another type of fertilizer, a more common type - fertilizer from animal wastes. At first I didn’t know it was made of animal waste. So when Ivan told us to put our hands into the lump of decompose to feel the warmth inside, I followed. Luckily it didn’t stink. In fact, it didn’t stink at all. Only the garbage enzyme, the natural SK2 claimed by Ivan, stinks. Lol.

-----------------

The next day was another blast. I went to help up with the Jumbo Sales at Mont Kiara organized by Lee Lee and Zhi Yong. They are going to the Sabah Expedition end of this month. The crowd was not satisfying and so was the sales. But the good thing was I saw a lot of Korean families , Japanese and white people walking around this area. How cool was that? Hehe.

This is our stall

The sales ended at 6pm but I only got back to my car at 8pm because of the carpooling effect. =( Sweat.. After that I went to yamcha with a friend in Bandar Puteri. When I reached home it was already 12am.

Maybe due to insufficient water plus too much dehydration (coz stand under the sun), insufficient sleep and too much Mc Donald's (for breakfast and lunch) on Sunday, I got a flu again. Padan muka lo. Sien.... I hate flu! It makes my head dizzy.

Now I'm having Mc Donald's phobia already. No more French fries for another few weeks!

I hate flu with runny nose! Especially when the tissue paper can only wipe a bit then it's a'll wet and have to throw away already. Maybe I should consider using sanitary pad to wipe dry? Or tampons? lol. Idea taken from the movie She's the Man. hehe.
