Well done Raleigh China!

Raleigh China complete their first assessment weekend!

13 candidates from 6 cities and 11 volunteer staff members took part in the first ever Raleigh China assessment weekend in Shanghai. Here is an update from Garrison Lu, Raleigh China's CEO:

‘We chose a training facility at the foot of Sheshan Mountain of Shanghai as our base( it is not a high hill , but it is the only hill we can find in Shanghai ), The Camp Chief , Logistics Officer and myself as the Supervisor arrived early to make logistics arrangements ,and Joe and the Admin , photographer, 2 Team Chiefs and 2 Assistant Team Chiefs along with all the candidates trekked an hour from the light rail station to the base, when they arrived, we had two big campfires which creates some kind of tough sense to welcome them, shortly after the briefing speech by me, the candidates were rushed to cook dinner for themselves in the dark, they managed to make some! We were a little surprised to find that these young Chinese do have the heart for great challenges!

In the morning, I gave them some briefings about Raleigh and Expeditions, also our Gansu project, a lot of valuable questions were raised and we provided answers for each. Then the two teams, A1 and A2 were taken into a food hunting for lunch, each team had to search for 20 plastic tags with rice, vegetables, sauce, salt etc written on them, in different assigned areas.

We also ran other small tasks, and before each task, a team leader, a motivator, a safety must came out of the team, and de-briefing time was given after each task, the team chiefs carried out their duties well, they brought to the board room quite accurate observations about each candidate, and our photographer Lannie provided Raleigh ID photos for the assessment meeting.

At the end of this 22hrs event, we gave an awarding ceremony, based on their current ability and potential, we awarded them with different certificates of venturers and volunteer staff.'

Sunway Roadshow featured!

Raleigh Sunway roadshow in Guang Ming!

Note: Credits to Zhen Ning for translating the whole article!

Environment protection is not a new topic nowadays,
when we mention about loving the earth, next comes would be letting "life" lives longer. We often get stuck and confused, "Can I really do that with my meager strength?" Hesitate no more! A simple action everyday can lead to a "prettier" earth. Protecting the earth, can be as simple as ABC!

the picture :
< ^ > the environmental protection event was fully-supported by the Sunway University students, photos of them visiting the booths are featured.

---
the title:
red n black : Let ( all the spirit in the earth ) have a way to live
green : Do something for the Earth

---
body:
In conjunction with the Earth Day, Petaling Jaya Sunway
University College held a 2 days environment protection event --- Generation Green, to remind the students about the importance of environmental consciousness.

This event supported by over 15 organisations, which include activities such as sharing of knowledge, and sales of environmental protection products, with one mission of supporting awareness of earth protection.

We always assume that protecting the earth is kinda "huge job", which to a normal person like you and me, is very difficult. Thus, we will just leave it to other people to be involved in this "huge job".

This thinking is absolutely wrong, as whether you are at the age of 3 to 80, and as a human living in planet Earth, we have the responsibility to do something for the earth.

Protecting the earth is very simple:
1) Decreasing the usage of
plastic bag everyday
2) DIY organic fertiliser with the dregs from kitchen,

3) House developer to chop less tree

Each of the action mentioned also can lighten up the burden on the earth.

Still don't know how to involve in environmental protection?

Learn from Generation Green, you will realise that environmental protection
is not that difficult after all!

RIMM 2009 Ended with Great Success

Raleigh International Mountain Marathon 2009 ended with great success
The most challenging and competitive event in the past 10 years

(Hong Kong) The 10th anniversary Raleigh International Mountain Marathon 2009(RIMM 2009) was completed in great success on 8th march 2009. The closing ceremony was held at Tai Po Buddhist Hui Yuan College.
This year, 150 teams, approximately 400 participants joined the event in 6 categories including: Elite, Men, Women, Mixed, Competition Explorer and Country Walk Explorer. The first team sprinted to the finish line was Team 204 of Men category. They only used 8 hours and 36 minutes to complete the 40 – 50 kilometers journey.

The champion of elite team completed 50-60 kilometers journey within 8 hours and 4 minutes. They said,” This year, the route for elite team is amusing and tricky. It is not only a test of participants’ physical strength but also the map reading skills. I would like to thank the organizing committee for putting significant efforts in designing such a wonderful route for us. It is great that we can choose different routes to reach each checkpoint. Under such a foggy weather, the whole competition is exciting as the elite teams complete the race with similar result.”

International team was added this year. Five teams from Malaysia were invited to join Mountain Marathon 2009. They showed their excitement before the competition started “The map used in the competition is totally strange to us. It is more detailed and complicated than the map we used in Malaysia.” Competing in a new environment using a new-type of map under an unpredictable weather was a great challenge to the Malaysian teams who joined the race for the first time. Completing the race is a good demonstration of their passion and persistence.
Mountain Marathon 2009 was not only a stage for heroes to challenge themselves; it also became a stage full of romance: A couple is engaged right after the event. Mr. Romance used our stage at Finish Point for proposing marriage, withhis champagne and Ferrero Rocher flower, under the witness of other participants. The answer he got from his girlfriend is: “YES, I DO!!!”

Lepuk and the torturing watermelons

Posted by Poh-E in ,

Last monthly meeting at Sg Lepuk Falls was watermelon-ly tiring. lol..

Being late because of work, Soon and me started about two hours later than the rest. Carried two watermelons up with Soon, each of us took one and each watermelon weighed about 8kg!!

It was the most memorable training I had. Coz the watermelon was damn heavy to carry la. Plus it slowed down my usual trekking pace, especially when crawling over tree trunks. Not only the weight of the watermelon pulled me backwards, the watermelon was hard on my back too. This trek was quite similar to the demoralizing feeling from trekking Angsi. Summore we had to keep up with the time to reach the waterfall coz everyone was there already.

I like this photo. Very artistic.

We had to reach there before everyone leave the waterfall. So we kept pushing ourselves forward. No, we didn't run. Not with the watermelons on our backs. We trekked slowly one step at a time but restricted the resting time. It was so tiring until we didn't have the energy to take photo of us carrying the watermelon.

It was one and half hours later when we reached the waterfall and met the Raleigh people there. When we put down the bags containing the watermelon, we felt so light as if we can float in the air! It was one of my toughest training I had. But I was thrilled and satisfied with my stamina. =)

When I was at the waterfall, I just washed my hair, face and limbs with the ice-cold water to prevent the sweat bees from buzzing around my head and body. That place really had a lot of sweat bees. Kena stung by them once already, really scared of them.

Sweat bees feasting on the sweat

I didn't jump into the water that day. All I did was eating the macaroni and mashed potato cooked by Cristal. Hehe. I think I finished the whole mess tin of both. This was the most bloated trek I had. lol. Normally when I trek I will have to fill my stomach with chocolate bars but this time, trekking down from waterfall need no chocolate bars at all. Muahaha..

Talking about food, let's not forget the watermelons. This was the fate of the watermelons:

Slide down the waterfall. One of the watermelons was broken. lol..

Chill it in waterfall water

Got carried around

Then only can open to eat. lol.

Everyone had different ways to enjoy the waterfall:

Some jumped

Some glided

Some stood around having fun

The scenery there was nice too.

Kampung kids had fun at the river.

Quite a lot of dragonflies when trekking towards the waterfall.

April Monthly Meet - Sg Lepuk Falls

Posted by Poh-E in ,

Err.............
NO there are no skimpy-bikini-wearing-bronze-toned-sexy-ladies to be found in Sg Lepuk Falls.

But here is a good reason why you should come join us:

I can hear the rush of the water long before I see the falls. As I sit down on the big gray slate rock that has been warmed by the early morning sun, I begin to gulp in the beauty as a starving man would gulp down food

As I gaze at it, I can feel the coolness and the power of the water as it rushes over the rocks and into the pool ten feet below. I lay back on my rock and see that the trees have opened their leaves to allow me a view of the sky. The sky is an azure blue with white pillowy clouds.

I close my eyes and listen to the sound of the waterfall and let it lure me into that nowhere land that makes me feel as if I totally alone, the lone survivor on this planet. My mind goes oblivious to everything except for the rushing sound of the water. Slowly other sounds begin to filter through. I hear the birds singing, the squirrels still chattering away as I continue to lie there totally at peace with myself.

Of Watermelons And A Hill

Posted by Poh-E in ,

It was less traversed, less explored, less known.

Yet, we went to it, embraced it and had ourselves roasted under the sun with full enthusiasm, renewed glory and much to reminisce about.

If a hill is deemed challenging, it is Bukit Tabur East that will give that hill a run for its money. And YES, we made our mark there right at the summit of Bukit Tabur East!

A relatively simple trek though it was, the vertical rock climbing route that preceded the summit was truly a physical teaser, especially during descent.

Eventually, though, the hike went well, the watermelons gave a hydrating assurance after losing much hydration traversing up and down the rocky Bukit Tabur East, and courtesy of Kar Lye's baking passion (an assumption), six humans received birthday chocolate cookies.
Atop the hill, it could be clearly seen that KL city was a polluted scene while the Klang Gates' Dam had a backdrop of serene greenery.

Although fatigue kicked in for a few persons, the fact that everyone was down safe and not losing any limbs was testament of what the mind can do. Applauds too to a few caring souls who provided their strength and support to the fatigued persons.
Now, the following pictures will do the narrating of the hike chronologically.

Arrival at the foot of the hill...

Stretching muscles, loosening tendons...

In we went...

Up, up and up...

Resting for a longer journey ahead...
Still doing good...
Simply priceless smiles...

As always, leaving our mark!

Great companions...

Nothing like awesome-blossom nature...

For the record...

I come, I see, I conquer...

Awaiting the rest...

Can you imagine, water for 33 people in them four watermelons?!?!

Raleigh KL's March tribal council...

March babies...

Before the sun had us all roasted!

Thank you all who made it and we hope to see you again! =D
