Oct Monthly Meet - Go Green with Raleigh KL

Posted by Poh-E in ,

Raleigh KL is celebrating its 10th Birthday this year. The best way to celebrate this significant event is of course by getting out there to save your environment. GO GREEN this October with Raleigh KL.

This monthly meet, we'll be cleaning the trail at Kota Damansara Community Forest Park together with Malaysia Nature Society (MNS). The Kota Damansara Community Forest Park was originally known as the Sg. Buloh Forest Reserve which was gazetted in 1898, making the oldest forest reserves in Malaysia.

Besides clearing the trail, you'll also get first hand stories from fresh-from-the-oven venturers who just came back from Sabah. Also, bid good bye with venturers who are embarking on their very own Raleigh Expedition soon, get updates from other Raleigh support groups and most of all to meet new faces who share the same Raleigh spirit as YOU.

The event will be held on 10 - 11 October 2009!

Raleigh Challenge - Wilson Trail 2009 is HK only charitable hiking event which covers the whole 78-km Wilson Trail, ranging from South to North, racing from Hong Kong Island to Kowloon and ending in Nam Chung, New Territories. Drake's Aussie Visit: By Pei Ting, Tham

Posted by Poh-E in

Name: Tham Pei Ting Expedition: 06A as Host Country Venturer (Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia)

What are you doing now:

Internship program at Outward Bound Australia, with a Cert IV in Outdoor Recreation.
Based in Tharwa, Canberra, Australia.

What has Raleigh meant for you:

The 3 months on Raleigh expedition was definitely one of the highlights of my gap year. It was not only a good test of myself being out of my comfort zones in every aspect, it was also a challenging experience being the "middle-man", adapting to the ways of the "foreigner" in my team, as well as getting to know fellow countrymen in a faraway corner of the country whom most i knew nothing about in the comforts of my city living in Kuala Lumpur. It opened my eyes to the diversity and beauty of people and nature of my own country, and got to visit places that I will never be able to venture myself, and make acquantainces with one of the most sincerely happy and contented people in this world. The combination of the experiences in that 3 months is a wild mix of physical challenge and emotions happy and sad, and nothing else can be comparable to it.

Meeting fellow venturers during the expedition inspired me to fulfill my childhood dream of travelling to Everest Base Camp. Hearing all their experiences and their travelling plans gave me confidence that I can achieve it if I set my mind to it, and indeed at the end of 2006 I set off for a 1 month backpacking trip to Nepal and reached Everest Base Camp. That in itself is the first of my many backpacking sojourns around the world, including Europe, Thailand and Vietnam.

Aside from the direct impact of the Raleigh expedition, I eventually got involved with the Raleigh KL support group and was a committee member for 2 terms. That experience is valuable in itself as I garnered much learning opportunities while managing the support group. Most importantly, I have made many lifelong friends in that support group that share the same passion for the outdoors and great life experiences, and we are all passionate in sharing the Raleigh experience to the rest of Malaysian youth.

Raleigh has also indirectly influence my chosen career path. Through expedition I witnessed the powerful value of the outdoors in personal development, and from then on developed a keen interest in outdoor education and development. Through this internship program in Outward Bound Australia, I am learning technical skills in outdoor sports, as well as soft skills such as outdoors facilitation. I hope to harness the powerful experiences one gets being in the outdoors to help bring out and discover one's personal potential. Similarly with many Raleigh experiences that have changed the lives of many young people, I hope to do the same thing, and of course one day hope to do it for Raleigh!

Embracing the Gift of Life

WE’VE all thought about doing the “do-gooder” thing at one point or another in our lives. Eventually, a person realises that it is easier to say and plan than to actually put these into action. Despite grandiose plans for making the world a better place, the only charitable thing one can sometimes do is to give away one’s old clothes and to donate an occasional ringgit or two to the blind person seeking alms at a mamak restaurant.

So when any ‘potential messiah’ comes across a chance to really, actually make a difference, how can one refuse?

Envy this group of spunky youngsters who have made the sojourn from thousands of miles away from their hometown in the UK, because they were able to do the things some of us have always wanted to do.

CLEAN water is flowing from taps at three remote Sabah villages thanks to the efforts of youth volunteer movement Raleigh.

Two teams of 15 Raleigh Borneo volunteers from diverse countries ranging from Britain to Malaysia spent over a month at the villages in the northern Pitas district and two settlements at the foothills of Mount Kinabalu in Ranau district building a network of dams and pipes so that the villagers could enjoy clean water.
