Final Expedition Update for 11D

Posted by Poh-E in

Hola,

To all those that are still following the antics of Expedition 11D, it is coming to an end for them. I'm sure they must have had some great fun the past few months. Coming back tanner, darker and maybe taller, they will also be filled with pride of what they have done and accomplished not only with the community and the environment around them but also with themselves. To take yourself out of your comfort zone shakes your foundation and you get a better footing of who you are. OK, enough ramblings from me.

So here are some pictures and right before I end this email, I would like to ask that you don't (DON'T) send them any more snail mails. They will not receive them on time. However if you would like to reach them anyways, do post comments on the blog (www.raleighborneo.blogspot.com ). So without further ado, the final picture update ! (Pssst, you can find more pictures and updates on the blog too you know.)

Dharushini, June Yin Tan and Ricky Cheah embarks on their final adventure together in the jungles of Borneo. Will they come out as Tarzan or Jane? Well, ask them yourself when you see them the next time. I'm sure they would be glad to tell. (They would be out with a tan after their diving experience too!)

Here Chew Yoke Yuen is at Sonsogon Magandai after finishing her community phase (Alpha 1) of building a kindergarten for the children in the village. I think she is singing to them but personally what I like about the picture is the small girl at the bottom of the picture with her face painted.

Cynthia Alexander is shown here at Maliangin Island for Alpha 2 telling the villagers that "Yes the gravity water feed system is fixed, try it!" in summary of the actual message "The Gravity Water Feed of Maliangin Island is hereby officially OPEN on the 31st August 2011. Raleigh. "

Interested in finding your own expedition? Email me at expedition@raleighinternational.org.my

Oh and a quick reminder, do register for the September Monthly Meet at this link (www.raleighinternational.org.my/2011/08/september-mm-let-us-be-green-and-be.html)

Thats all from me. Till next time from your friendly neighbourhood expedition officer.

Waterfall clean-up and meeting the community!

Posted by Poh-E in

On the August Monthly Meet, we have a chance to meet Orang Asal (indigenous people) in person, talk to them, and understand their culture. The small Semai community stays in the laid back hills of Gombak.

The highlight of the visit to Orang Asal was the special musical performance By Encik Rahman, he holds a “Pensol” (flute), and blows out music via NOSE.

Besides enjoying the environment and the companion by Orang Asal, we also managed to help them clean the river in the community. It was sad to see rubbish scattered everywhere in and around the river. Can you imagine if your water source is spoiled by all the rubbish thrown by irresponsible intruders?

Here are some photos of the activities during the visit. I will let the photos do the talking.

Obstacles.

Unspoilt waterfall, beautiful, isn't it?

Happy rubbish collectors

Serious rubbish collectors

Happy rubbish collector 2

Chef of the day

"I'm hungry, when will it done?"

Yum yum yum delicious!

Celebrating Ange's birthday.

Youngest participant, 2 years old Amorina from New Zealand

Group photo

Here is a quick video by Chris who took some videos with his camera. Thanks Chris.

Hope this visit has opened your eyes. We should be grateful with what we have right now.
