Oct MM Deep Impact: How did it go?

Posted by Poh-E in ,

Wow.

We stood in awe, still taking in the fact that within the small entrance to Gua Tempurung lies a hollow cavern with preposterously massive proportions. We were also surprised how windy it was within the cave. Right, let the adventure begin.

For the first 30 minutes, we went through man-made trails ranging from bridges to stairs. We were all surprised by the amount of rock formations that look eerily similar to human faces.

But as we carried on, it was all stone tunnels and waterways, having the need to crawl through most of them, getting wet on several occasions just to squeeze through impossible gaps.

"The temperature dropped as we ventured deeper into the realm of darkness, with head-torches giving everyone their only assurance of safety,"

We went through countless of gaps, creeks, trenches and tunnels before we saw a glimpse of sunlight, signifying the end of our journey.

It was a good 4 hours of exercise, slipping and sliding our way through mother nature's own labyrinth. We had seen, touched, smelt and felt things that were unique to us. All of which made it a special day to remember.

Sept MM The Great Migration: How did it go?

Posted by Poh-E in

Amazing scenery.

Rejuvenating breeze.

Lovely wildlife.

We had none of that. Not this time.

What we had, was a room of disorganized mess, the unmistakable smell of mold and what can only be described as excrement. We were moving all of our equipment to a brand new logs room, so that meant clearing the old one out. Oh boy.

You're lucky it's not on smelly-vision
It is a dirty job, but someone has to do it. And what a great job we did, clearing the old logs room with unparalleled efficiency while being motivated by the clean air that was available on the outside. But now we face the other problem; moving them to their new home.

The old logs room was on the 15th floor of a building with only 2 working elevators. Residents were slightly annoyed as we brimmed the minuscule elevator but nevertheless our equipment made their way, eventually, to their new, spacious, clean, organized home.

And you thought it was over. Nope, the great migration has only just begun. To ensure our logistics department operates smoothly, logs officer Ricky has devised a plan to organize the equipment.

Lost mess tins over the years.

So off we went, dividing into groups, each working on specific types of equipment.

From kitchen utensils to tent gear, we went through every nook and cranny, every corner of every box to compile a brand new equipment list.

Wow they fit perfectly!
Then fellow member Carrot found out the reason we need new life jackets.

Furthermore, we found gems ranging from tiny swiss-army knives to massive anniversary banners; the latter gave us ideas on our Alumni Dinner, which you will see this November. All in all, it was a satisfying day for our hardworking volunteers, helping to keep our projects running by ensuring our equipment are in tip-top condition, and having a laugh throughout the process. So many thanks for those who helped out!
Where did that come from?

Raleigh Relay: A round island swim

Posted by Poh-E in ,

It was the year 1992, Raleigh Kuala Lumpur embarked on a remarkable quest to swim across the Malacca Straits - an incredible 60 kilometers in total; all in the name of raising funds to send Malaysian youths to Raleigh EXPEDITIONS around the world.

    20 years on,
                  we are back.

Same objectives, BIGGER challenge.

Record-breaking-BIG.

Next April, collaborating with the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia, we would attempt this 183,727 feet feat featuring some of the fittest (not to mention bravest) swimmers around.

Update 7/11/12:
So why do we do this?

To fundraise in preparation to send more Malaysian youths to Raleigh Expeditions (Tanzania, Costa Rica, Borneo etc.), which focuses on youth development through community, environment and adventure projects.

To reach out to the public, introducing Raleigh Kuala Lumpur and it’s locally run activities and projects.

As a platform for Raleigh ex-venturers to contribute back to society.

How do we do it?

We need YOU to join us to form a crew of 56 for this super-swim of 56 kilometres in part of Malaysia’s 56th year of independence.

We are also seeking corporate organizations who are interested in providing us with financial or any other forms of support to help us in achieving our objectives.

August MM Saga Hike: How did it go?

Posted by Poh-E in

There was a whiff of adventure in the air. The atmosphere felt tense as we readied ourselves for the challenge that awaited us. Bukit Saga is no Mount Everest, but to regular city dwellers like me who sit around all day looking at computer screens, it’s more than a handful.

By the looks of many of the staff members, I could tell they’ve done this more than once. Armed with an arsenal of equipment ranging from medical kits to hiking gear, they were well prepared for the journey.

The terrain was unbelievable. I have seen thorny plants and spiky leaves before, but the ones at Bukit Saga were downright lethal. Coupled with extremely muddy forest floors, I found myself right in the middle of Mother Nature’s kill zone.

As we moved on though, everyone settled into their comfort zone; we dodged vines and avoided stumps in almost perfect harmony, and the once twisty trail seemed to unwind itself.

But after what felt like a month to me, fatigue and the unbearable feeling of sand in my shoes slowed me down.

Next thing you know, a mesmerizing waterfall came into sight.

You cannot even begin to comprehend how happy everyone was.

Drunk in ecstasy and relief, we leapt for the rocks that were conveniently shaped like benches. All of a sudden Mother Nature revealed her treasures; an array of fascinating wildlife greeted us. Lizards, colorful insects, fishes and even a turtle showed up, arousing the curiosity of everyone. We chilled out under the refreshing jets of water and even danced along to fellow staff member Carrot.

Then somebody broke out the crisps. Life just keeps getting better. Thoroughly satisfied with all the fun we had (and the food), we decided it was time to head home.

Wow.

I have been completely blown away by the sights and sounds of Bukit Saga. There is certainly other ways to start your weekend, but trust me; few are as incredible as this.
