SOS (Save Our Seahorses)! - Save Our Fellow Creatures!
Posted by Poh-E in environmental, Projects
There will be an SOS (Save Our Seahorses) trip to Sungai Pulai from 25-29 April 2009 (Sat-Wed).
In supporting the cause of SOS to conserve Sungai Pulai (Pulai River Estuary) and its seagrass beds, the home to our fellow cute creatures, the Spotted Seahorses (Hippocampus kuda), this 5-day trip will be our way of showing support and to aid in the research works of the SOS non-profit group.
Hippocampus kuda
The Spotted Seahorse is the only species found in estuaries, especially in the Pulai River Estuary, which has large tracts of seagrass beds.
The sheltered and strategic location of the Pulai River Estuary is heaven for the seahorse and seagrass beds.
Within a decade, this less than a palm-size fish has been reduced by over 80 %. Further habitat destruction will likely drive them into extinction.
What you will do?
- Help gather scientific data relevant for the conservation of seahorses and the seagrass ecosystem (tagging, seagrass bed survey, etc.).
- Mingle and do your bit for the nearby orang asli settlement.
- Experience the wonders of Pulai River Estuary.
What you will get?
- A homestay experience at the orang asli village.
- A break from the hustle and bustle of city life.
- Boundless gratitude from the little creatures and Mother Nature.
How much?
The 5-day trip will cost in the range of RM 150 - 200 per person (inclusive of food, accomodation and transportation for that duration).
Places are still available.

We need to face it. What are we really doing? If you are not a member yet, have not participated in any activities yet, or have participated in a couple or so activities but not a member yet, what is it that has prompted you to drop by? If you are a Raleigh member, amidst all the activities and expeditions, have you gone off-centre from the prime focus of the objectives of being a Raleigh-ian? It may be easy to lose grip of what the real cause of Raleigh is all about in the midst of various distractions and happenings. Organising and participating in various events may in themselves be so time-consuming that we get too focused on the events and lose touch with the very foundation of contributing for a better society and a greener environment. It is akin to being drowned in the captivating aroma of food that we may sometimes forget the purpose of survival it serves us. Every time that we get involved in something ‘Raleigh’, it is only apt to wear a purpose tag in our minds, or get moving with questions only we know the answers to. Why are we interested in the event? Why do we want to go for an expedition? Why do we want to spend all the time and energy? What do we want to gain from the experience? How can we contribute to the betterment of the community, individuals and the environment? What positive vibes do we want to send out? The answers may be as simple as to create awareness and to support, but what drives you will be what gives you most pleasure. Of course, getting serious with conducting a reality check does not mean at all that any fun is lost along the way. A Raleigh way of life is about realising your potential and learning what you can best offer to the world while taking yourself not too seriously. It is a balance of working hard for a purpose yet knowing when to sit back and relax. Recently, Raleigh KL had a chance to have a chat with virtualmalaysia.com regarding travelling with a purpose. The article on the website is beyond commendable. For all it is worth, it is always good to have the opportunity to see things in perspective, even on another website. =D To know more, visit: http://www.virtualmalaysia. A Raleigh life is all about: Getting to know nature; discovering your inner self; learning about others and together serving a better cause for a better world! A note from a dashing young prince

My story: It was actually Prince William that introduced me to Raleigh. Back then when he was in Chile, there were photos of him everywhere in the media. And he was wearing a big big Raleigh shirt.
So that's how i knew Raleigh :)
if they can make a prince wash toilets, imagine how much inspiration they can give me to do greater things?
kl towerthon 2009

woke up early in the morning, anticipating the moment to arrive.
arrived at the starting point and meet dino, karlye, luyi, luying, peiting, christal (who all ran from karlye's hse ,which is located at kl central,to kl tower as last minute RIMM training..only raleigh ppl will do this kind of crazy and silly thing. but i'm so grateful to join this crazy family, to do things where normal ppl wont do.)
after approximately an hour of taking photo session/chit chat session/last training session/breakfast session, the comes 8.45am. the women open category is abt to start. sympathetic effect is taking place and my heart is beating in such vigorous tempo.so as shiwei's.
as the gun fired, the excitement mounted and we started to run!
(on the other hand raleigh gang berkecoh-kecoh along the road to do publicity.)
huh,i really felt the 1km uphill tar road was very much harder than 2058 steps on the stairs.at first, we wasn't that synchonised and we cant run fast.both of us were gasping for more oxygen and my leg muscles starting to get sore. but, okay, after a month of training,i believed myself to be mentally fit-at least i'm determined enough to endure the muscle sore and continue running without stopping.
finally we're at the tower base and started our journey of the never ending climb.we sweat inside out, outside in even before we reached mid tower.i dunno how many floors are there,we climbed and climbed and climbed.by the way, i enjoy reading all the sportsman's quotes.although some quotes doesn't really inspired me,it fun to find out what these ppl spoke before.
at some floors, there's water break.it was really a temptation to stay at the air-conditioned room but not to forgot our initial thought was to complete our mission.shi wei asked me to time her so we are not staying in the room for a long time.we agreed on the time 3minutes. but then i timed less than that.
experiment conclusion:unless you test urself fully, you cant know your true limits.
along the way up,saw some really fit veteran running up as if he's still a teenager.saw some not so fit uncle auntie was taking their own leisure time to wander up the stairs.saw some school boys sprang up like hell.saw some photographer we pose.saw some exhausted runner we smiled to encourage each other.saw some category E participants and i started to get nervous because we're taking too long to accomplish our task!
eventually and without realizing, we reached towerhead 3 and finished the race.after we have returned the number chip,we walked downstairs in 3 legs to towerhead 1-a place where u can have a 360 degree birdeye's view of kl city.then, we posed again.oh ya..not to forget to thank our official photographer christal and my official camera nikon D60 for all the photos taken.
since there's so many ppl q-ing up for the only lift to get down to towerbase, we loitered around towerhead to do some publicity.too bad there wasn't any media,i guessed they went down to take the winners' photographs .only some random curious uncle asking why are we tying legs together.
got down to meet fellow raleigh-ians and got my first medal!-a finisher medal in the goodie bag.i'm happy enough to get a medal.i'll remember what i did whenever i look at it.although we din meet our target to have it done in 1hour, it was still a great and unforgetable experience!
next, have our very own "bandana un-tie ceremony".din't expect there's some background music for our little ceremony.
last but not least, took a short cut walk to petaling street and have za zheung min as lunch.the mee was as nice as it was before.finally,i'd like to end the day(event) with this peaceful photo.

Ahhhh…..cool and refreshing air!
Oh wait..that’s the wrong picture.
This is more like it.
What did we do up there? That’s a good question. I’ll let the pictures do the talking. I meant, who’s gonna actually read ALL the words.(Except for me, of course I’ll have to read what I write)
Where we stayed. Lovely, albeit very old colonial bungalow called the Glen Bungalow.
Note how the middle person added a “Y” to “Raleigh” making it “Raleigh-y”. Not sure what the president of “Raleigh” would think of with the ’corruption’ of the sacred word “Raleigh”. (Thanks to you ,Dennis the Menace)
Had a feller that thought waterfalls occur on dry land and decided not to bring any clothes to change into.
Had our mascot do a martial art stunt in the waterfall having survived the “accident” earlier on.
Had a feller enjoying himself with the ladies. (Note, we do not condone any promiscuous behavior of any kind)
Observed a loving ‘amah’ teaching a younger ‘amah’ how to wear a sarong.
Subjected willing participants to a natural blood donation exercise and a walk in the park. (This was before they knew about it)
