IW Nov 13 - Now Open for Staff Registration!

Posted by Poh-E in , ,

Dear Raleigh KL friends & supporters,

The upcoming Introduction Weekend will be held from 29 November - 1 December 2013.
We are now opening staff registration!

Introduction Weekend is not just a platform for young people to learn more about themselves and about Raleigh expeditions. We also believe that IW is a great platform for all Raleigh members to learn and grow. No matter if you are an ex-venturer, ex-project manager, ex-president, ex-RIC crocodile, monthly meet veteran or just fresh off IW in May, there are many areas of skills to pick up in IW and we believe that there is always an opportunity for everyone for continuing development.

Aside from that, perhaps all you really need, is a weekend off in the jungle, with a bunch of enthusiastic folks to tag along with.

But ultimately, Raleigh KL is a fully voluntary organisation. We have prided ourselves to have consistently delivered IW through the years to provide this opportunity for young people to start their Raleigh journey. We are an organisation OF volunteers FOR volunteers, and I believe this passion and enthusiasm is precisely the magic ingredients that form the Raleigh spirit.

Hence, no matter your motivations or reasons, I would like to call on you again to revisit this spirit and join us by volunteering your time as staff this upcoming IW.

Staff roles and descriptions:
Note that some roles can be doubled up during IW, so you can sign up for more than one role

Coordinators
Must be ex-venturers. You will be attached to a participant team, and be with them through their whole IW journey. There is a lot of facilitation and leadership involved in this role, and you will act as a mentor to your team. Challenging but highly rewarding.

Medic
Must have training or certification in first aid or similar courses. I don't think further explanation is needed on how essential this role is for security and emergency. You are a rare breed. We need you.

PR & Registration
Handling of enquiries and processing participant's application. You will also be needed on Friday evening to register participant's arrival. You will be the backbone of IW even before IW starts. Great for those who would like to help but unable to attend IW itself.

Friday set up team
If you are available on this Friday, we would GREATLY appreciate your help. You will go to the IW site in advance and start the set up of the campsite.

Trailblazer
Responsible for ensuring clear paths on the trekking trail, and also safe return of everyone from the trek.

Facilitation + Logistics + Camp duties = Minions
The core working team of IW. We have received feedback from previous IWs that most staff enjoy a variety of duties. This is also a great way for everyone to have a go at facilitating game sessions. Hence we have decided to combine these three teams and everybody will get to rotate between different duties.

Sunday support team at RMC
If you are unable to attend the full IW, but can spare some time on Sunday afternoon, we will appreciate some hands in getting RMC ready for the return of the whole IW crew for the closing.

SIGN UP HERE NOW:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Staff Facilitation Training
Date: 16th November 2013 (Saturday)
Time: 9am - 6pm
Venue : TBC
I will be conducting this training using experiences I have gained as an Outward Bound Instructor and group facilitator. The goal of this training is to increase the level of facilitation competency within IW staff as a whole. We are creating more opportunities to facilitate for all staff, and we want you to be prepared for it. Facilitation is also a great skill to have that can be applied in areas outside IW such as school, workplace, project work, etc.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have any enquiries, feel free to contact:
1. Zhi Min - IW Nov13 Chief Organizer at secretary2@raleighinternational.org.my
2. Pei Ting - IW Officer at introweek@raleighinternational.org.my

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you are unable to join us this IW, do support us by spreading the word about IW and about Raleigh KL. Feel free to share our posts on the website and Facebook. We want to get more people to Get Out There!

THANK YOU all. I look forward to see you!

Post-Monthly Activity Report: August 2013 - Waterfall Clean-up at Templer's Park

Posted by Poh-E in ,

“It’s 7.30am already? Doesn’t look like it..”

Not in this sort of weather.

With the sky filled a bland, gloomy grey, we contemplated the dangers that would arise in Sungai Pisang if the rain continued to pour. And we knew through experience that it was not a risk worth taking. But then we remembered an alternative.

Templer’s Park was only a 20 minute drive away from our meeting point in Gombak, and with the absence of large rivers it would be a safer place for us to carry out our mission. Oh yes, this month we set out to do our part in keeping our country clean.

Weirdly, the moment we arrived at Templer's Park, the weather turned absolutely brilliant. No matter, we wasted no time and started eliminating the blemishes that ruined mother nature's complexion. Styrofoam cups, fast food packaging, plastic bottles - you name it, boy did tourism mess the place up!

"I missed a tin can on the opposite bank? Rubbish."said En De. He laughed alone.

And that was BEFORE we started trekking. Unbelievable.
Soon we realized that we underestimated the amount of rubbish by a long shot, and thankfully old-timer Razak took the initiative to restock our fast depleting supply of rubbish bags.

If you look closely in the background, you will notice a tree that looks terrifyingly similar to a human being.

Still occupied with the goal of cleaning up the place, we reached the glorious waterfall at the end of the trek. It was hard to believe that it was an hour's trek when it felt more like 10 minutes. For those of us who have not been to a waterfall, it was time to get our feet wet (pun intended).

Invisible man brought his children along. They weren't very photogenic.

5 boxes of chocolates went missing that day. They were never recovered.

With all the rubbish collected, a shower only seemed appropriate.

At the end of the day, we were stunned not only by the amount of rubbish collected, but also by the amount of irresponsible people out there. We are blessed with a remarkably beautiful country that citizens elsewhere dream of. Yet, there are so many Malaysians out there who take this for granted, belittling or even ignoring the effects of the rubbish they so instinctively leave behind.

We might have won the battle today, but we haven't yet won the war.

What we are doing here goes beyond the bags of rubbish we amassed.

We are sending a message, showing you a glimpse of the destructive power of man (if you haven't already know), and urging you to do your role as an earthling in keeping the environment clean for future generations.

And you don't even have to go out and gather your own bag of rubbish.

Just don't leave any behind.

Post-Monthly Meet Report: July 2013 - Caving at Batu Maloi Cave

Posted by Poh-E in ,

Here, just a drizzle of water to cool you down.
"Remember to waterproof your things, you will definitely get wet during this trip" was the last sentence that was written on the event notice.

Well, this turned out to be true.

We were at Batu Maloi Cave, Negeri Sembilan, squeezing through pin holes they call passageways while attempting to stay dry, for the first few minutes anyways. We were on a constant battle against friction, or rather the lack of it, but as we went along we found a groove and maneuvered through the rifts with ease (pun intended).

Our guide Mr Nazri (4th from left) giving us tips on staying dry. They didn't work.
Just out of shot are his buddies using the stairs.
We encountered what seemed to be dead ends, only to discover that there are hidden paths among the boulders. It is like being in Batman's cave during a flood, only this time it looks more mysterious. Certain parts of the tunnel were shrouded in a somber mist, exuding a sense of uncertainty as we crawl towards dark abysses.

Honey, I found the remote control!
Shimmering sunlight pokes through the gaps occasionally, giving everything it can to dry our soaked outfits. However, the scenery would change from lush greenery to total darkness in a matter of minutes, making up for a thrilling journey, or shall I say chilling, as the water from the underground river was arctic cold. Despite all that, we would still get neck-deep into the river in order to carry on.

High and dry. Momentarily.
At the end of the day, I bet everyone felt a bit more like Indiana Jones, or Tarzan in fact. Dwelling in caves and threading through rivers may be tiring and uncomfortable from time to time, but so is being on a treadmill or an exercise bicycle. So if you ask me, I would take caving over that any day.

Hi all,

Pop quiz - Do you know the 4 challenges of Raleigh?

If you do, a gold star for you!

The 1st challenge of Raleigh is to attend Introduction Weekend. This weekend is an opportunity for newcomers to experience a snapshot of what is it like to be on a Raleigh expedition. This is also an avenue for young people to learn more about Raleigh KL as an organisation and the platforms available for young people such as yourself for personal development.

We are pleased to announce the two following dates for Introduction Weekend for year 2013/2014 :

1. 29 Nov - 1 Dec 2013
2. 28 - 30 March 2014

Participants
For those planning to join a Raleigh expedition and have yet to attend an IW, do note down these dates and anchor down some long term plans. Feel free to also spread the word about Raleigh KL and IW and get your friends out there too!
More details about the specific IW will be furnished closer to these dates.

Staff
As for the rest of Raleigh KL members, regulars and old-timers, do block off these dates if you are interested to join IW as a staff member. Serving as IW staff is a step further along the journey of personal development with Raleigh KL. There are various positions within the staff team that require different skill sets, such as logistics coordination, facilitation, f&b servicing and first aid. We welcome anyone interested to be a staff member in any of these IWs to drop us a note.

We will also like to encourage potential individuals out there to take on prominent leadership positions within the team. Those who take on leadership roles will get the chance to work closely with the committee in organising an IW from start to finish by helming specific responsibilities, and will get to lead a small team of their own to deliver these outcomes. This is actually a great opportunity to hone your leadership chops, so should you be interested in this challenge, do drop us a note as well.

IW has always been a unique event by volunteers for future volunteers. We would like to thank everyone for your support in all our past IWs, and we hope to see you soon in the next one!

Pei Ting
IW Officer 2013/14

Raleigh Round Island Challenge - THE SWIM.

Posted by Poh-E in , , , ,

So this is it. The last chapter of our epic adventure of 56 adventurous souls conquering 56km around Perhentian Island for Malaysia's 56th year of independence. We leave the calm and secure surroundings of the swimming pool for that endless piece of blue on the east side of the peninsula.

020513 1200 - Touch down on the island. We settled down, had lunch which was followed by a briefing of the rundown of the event, swimming formation, etc. The mood was laid back. Everybody was mingling around and getting to know their swim buddies, to be honest I couldn't wait to jump into the sea to start swimming.

1730 - After a brief photo session, it was time for our 'warm-up' swim. 500 meters of clear sea to be swam for all 55 of my swim buddies. Here we go.

Seconds into my swim, I was thankful that we choose Perhentian for our Round Island Challenge as the underwater view was brilliant. At certain regions I had to switch over from freestyle to breaststroke as the corals were less then a couple of feet from where my face was!

By the time everyone completed their stint, we were greeted by even more breath-taking scenery. At this point everybody, and I do mean everybody, swimmers, crews, even our awesome coach Mr Peh was now pumped up for the actual swim.

030513 0430 - After a couple of hours of miserably staring at the ceiling (I couldn't sleep at all) it was time for breakfast.

0530 - Here we were, on the beach, looking on at the massive pool of icy darkness, sending off the first group of swimmers. My shift was from 0930 to 1330, so I would be able to enjoy the gift of sunlight while swimming. These guys however, didn't. So hats off the these brave swimmers!

1230 - It was my time to hit the sea. I was a turtle in a group of sharks, and my job was to keep up. Now the tension starts to kick in. After stretching and warming up, we went out to the boat that was trailing the swimmers from the first shift.

WOOSH! My senses seemed sharpened as I dove into the sea to start my shift. I felt every wave, every change of temperature, every sting from the sea lice around me as I swam on.

10 minutes in the sea felt like 10 days. The heat from the afternoon sun, the soreness in my muscles, the bone-drying thirst, the ruthless battering of the waves and the massive gap between the lead swimmers and I all point to my early retirement from the challenge.

But you see I have been training for this challenge since last August, and for me to stop now would be the greatest disappointment of my life. I knew it was going to be a LONG swim, but at that moment I would rather die swimming than emerge from the water before I finished my part.

I just had to keep going.

And next you know, I heard cheers from the support boats. The relief I felt, and I believe so did all the others, was overwhelming. Fueled by the support from my teammates, the last 100 meters felt smooth and easy.

6 months ago, 300 meters in the pool was enough to put my fumes out.

I just swam 3 kilometers in the deep blue sea.

How's that for an adventure?

By: One of the swimmers ;)
