JUMBLESALE cum FUNDRAISING - Time for Year End Trash!
Posted by Poh-E in expedition fundraising
In the quest for my next phase of life - Raleigh International Expedition Sabah this coming Feb 2007, I am organising an jumble-sale cum fund-raising effort at Plaza Mont Kiara ABC Flee Market on the Sunday, 7th Jan 07 from 8.00 - 4.00pm.
Thanks to my food sponsor, I have some muffins and cheesecake (mmmmm....) to sell, in addition to that I will be selling some finger food i.e sausage, nuggets and fish /sotong balls as well as fried mee-hoon.
Apart from the FOOOOD sale, I intend to sell good 2nd hand items. I am looking for several hand-down items which I think most of you have in your storeroom, backyard, living room or even your own room .
1. Electrical appliances i.e iron, table lamp, blender, alarm clock, etc
2. Kitchen ware i.e plate, punchbowl, hangers, cookie jar, etc
3. Sports items i.e tennis/badminton/squash racquet, swimming goggles, etc
4. Others i.e photoframes, accessories, perfumes, bedding items, toiletries (unused of course!), souvenirs etc
I am NOT collecting toys, clothes, books because based on personal experience, it can only be sold at RM1-RM5 at the most and this would end up as junks to me after the sale (if unsold).
Please call/text me if you would like me to pick the junks up anytime from TUESDAY, 2nd JANUARY onwards. And if you have any contacts for company or friends who can donate/sponsor me items/food for my jumble sale, please kindly direct them to contact me personally @ VINEE Mobile : 013 210 3392
And of course, if you guys are free and would like to try some of my bee-hoon and fingerfood on the very Sunday 7th Jan, please do drive your wheels to Plaza Mont Kiara.
PS: Good place to 'cuci mata' oso (this applies to guys and girls as well!)
So guys... remember YOUR JUNK is MY ASSET!

Project Name | ZooRiffic 3 !!! Save Our Tigers, Give Them a Future |
Date: | 2 Dec 06 - 8am till 5pm |
Venue: | Zoo Negara, Hulu Kelang |
Project Leaders: | |
Project Partner: | Malaysian Zoological Society (Education Department) MYCAT (Malaysian Conservation Alliance for Tigers) MNS (Malaysian Nature Society) Precious Children Home, PJ |
Brief: | Zooriffic derives from a combination of two different words (zoo + the suffix of ‘terrific’) Why “Save Our Tigers?” because this event is held in collaboration with MYCAT, an NGO that focuses in tiger conservation. Unlike the previous two zooriffics, among the highlights of Zooriffic 3 were ; to encourage youth in appreciating nature and their surrounding in a fun and enjoyable way. Not only will they learn about conservation through the talks given, they too will understand that animals need people through our “animal specialist”! No wonder Noah was told to save those animals from the great flood. Imagine the earth without such creatures, won’t it look something like Mars- a boring place… Sponsored Items: |

Making A Difference
Posted by Poh-E in expedition stories
It is often encouraging to know that potential Venturers/ Raleigh members are enthusiastic in making a difference to the world or giving back to the society. This is good, as good as knowing most of the beauty queens’ standard answer of ‘WORLD PEACE’ for question like “if you can wish for one thing….”
Sadly, however noble the intention is, it is often meaningless if one cannot take concrete action to fulfill the vision.
I was told by a lecturer about a deaf patient who came seeking treatment at my faculty’s (I’m doing dentistry) clinic. Unfortunately, nobody understood sign language so the patient was referred from one department to another until someone with lip-reading skill was found. After listening to the story, I was thinking….hmmm…maybe I can do something about it….
So that was how the idea of the Sign Language Course came about. But me being the timid, inexperienced, busy Amy, I wasn’t sure whether other members woul like the idea, or if the Committee would support me. Then there were the time, venue, and cost factors to be considered ……(the list of excuses and worries can be compiled into a directory!!).
But since I had already included the Course in my 12-month plan to the Committee, I soldiered on. Things did not go smoothly, as always *sigh*. People dropping up last minute, late confirmation on venue booking, change of venue,etc.*frustrated*. Luckily, there is a deaf frog who keeps on reminding me ‘It’s a learning process!' (The frog is my lil secret!) :P
Now that the Sign Language Class has kick-started *sigh of relief*, plans are underway to collaborate with our deaf friends..
As I looked on at long-time Raleigh member BJ communicating with our hearing-impaired friends gesturing animatedly in Sign Language, a wave of calm and sense of achievement washes over me.
You may have 1001 ideas for fundraising; you may want to organize futsal for the orphans and so the list of shoulds, coulds and wants go on..... YOU WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
But what are you waiting for?

Lately, all I have been doing is reminisce about Expedition 03C Sabah. I'm in my final year at uni now & I must say that it is with great trepidation that I start the next phase of my life as my student days come to an end.
I miss my expedition. I can't believe that next year it'll be my fourth 'anniversary' since 03C. The working world is a crazy one & for that, I have this itch to just pack all my stuff & head off to another expedition upon graduation next June.
I miss the laid-back lifestyle. I miss the wonderful places I've been to, the people I've met & the experiences I've gained. I miss the waking up to the buzzing of those jungle insects. I miss enjoying the beautiful sunsets after a hard day's work. I miss singing whilst trekking. I miss dipping in the icy cold rivers of the Crocker Range. I miss the people. I miss rocking myself to sleep at night in a basha. I miss my hole-in-the-ground toilet. I miss not worrying about how I look or what people thought of me. I miss singing 'Jambatan Tamparuli' with the locals. I also miss singing 'Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes' with my fellow Venturers!
I miss a lot of things about expedition. Heck, i even miss porridge! However, I don't miss the leeches..... :)
*sigh.... Yes, I miss 03C......... I truly do.

30 chapters including Noun (Food, Animals, Objects & etc.), Verbs, Communication, Direction, Colors, Culture, Transport etc. The instructor is capable in conducting the course in both English and Malay. There is a high possibility that we can only complete part of the course as the original course takes 3 months to be completed and the fee is RM 250 for the whole course. However, our modified course will act as an intro to sign language. If the participants are interested, we can always resume the class for another 2 months with additional cost. On the other hand, if the participants are satisfied with a short course, then one month will do. We will see how's the response for these 4 sessions. Please feel free to give your opinion to me regarding the course so I can discuss with the instructor in order to tailor the course according to the preference of the majority. |

Project Name | Mural Paiting at Angel's |
Date: | 4 November 06 |
Venue: | Angel's Children Home, OUG |
Contact: | Tham Kar Lye or CK |
Project Partner: | Angels Children Home - Belinda 03-7983 2126 |
Brief: | Team Charlie from the previous IW had taken the challenge to raise fund for Angel's Children Home by collecting old newspaper for recycling. Charity and promoting enviromental awareness is their aim. Updated 25 Nov 06 hing by the 11th. With the help of many people (consist of RIKL members, non-RIKL members, friends, and neighbours, family members), the project was completed successfully. We managed to paint the mural on the side wall, paint the main wall with words of “Rumah Kanak-Kanak Angels Kuala Lumpur; 03-79832126”, provide a banner as well as a new signage for the Home. Everything mentioned in the proposal has been completed accordingly. Our most important achievement is definitely completing the project which will ultimately benefit Angels Children’s Home in various ways.Throughout the whole process, working as a team, we have picked up many important lessons. We have learnt how to communicate with the relevant authorities to ask for specific help (sponsorship) or possible purchase. In addition to this, we realised that help from others will only be offered if we, perso nally go looking for it. As we have now truly understand the phrase, “If you never try, you’ll never know”. Through this, we have gotten sponsorship for food, paint (partially) as well as other various items. Besides, through this project, we have crossed paths with many individuals that offered help in many ways, suiting their expertise. At such we learnt how to listen to others for appropriate advice, and to apply them accordingly. As a team in a whole, we have managed to come out with plans (though with disagreements at times) to make the best decisions for the project. Through this also, we learnt to compromise with one another. With detailed planning, and cautious back-up plans, we managed to tackle the “worst-case scenarios” i.e. saving the paint work from being wet by the rain. Though many times, our project was being delayed by the rain, we did not give up, and still went on to complete the project, even though at the expense of a later completion date. Other than that, through the recycling project, we have also learnt to be more environmental-conscious. In addition, the many visits to the orphanage (prior to the actual project day) have given us the opportunity to spend time with the underprivileged children, to indirectly realise how lucky we actually are. It is really important for us to realise that, so that in future, we can actively give back to the society in many ways. Updated 31 Oct 06 Attention to ALL! Team Charlie September IW 2006, has finished the first phase of our PIW project, and now as planned we are proceeding with the final phase; that is painting the main wall/ mural for Angels Children’s Home. Details on helping out on 4th of November 2006 are as below:
Important details: Contacts: Kar Lye - 012-201 8829 C.K. - 012-385 2051 (For further directions to the Home, or any transportation matters, please contact me for more details.) The Sri Petaling Star LRT station is nearby OUG, so if there are any volunteers travelling by train, we can arrange transportation to the Home. So, what more better way to start the month of dull, “holiday-less” November, other than this? Sign up now! Team Charlie Updated 27 October 06 What is happening? Mural Paiting at Angel's Why? • To paint the side wall and main wall of Angels Children’s Home; • To provide a banner for better exposure; • Replace the current signage with a new one that includes Chinese characters as well. The reason for all the three objectives: Residence around that area (OUG) will be aware of the home so they can further contribute in appropriate ways; As the area is mainly occupied by Chinese residence, a Chinese character signage is essential for possible donations. Who? Managing team: Team Charlie (IW SEPT 2006) How volunteers can help? 1) Help out on the actual recycling day-28th of October 2006 -We are targeting the residential area around OUG (nearby to Angels Children’s Home) as that will be our temporary storage spot for the day. -Own transport is recommended as we will be travelling by car, to do a door-to-door collection 2) Launch a mini recycling project targeted at family, relatives, friends, colleagues, etc - By collecting any recycling items and drop it to Angels Children’s Home on 28th October 2006 (Recycled items: Old newspaper, aluminium can, plastic, glass, any kind of papers, office paper, black and white paper, computer form, scrap metal, old magazine, cardboard boxes, etc) 3) Help out on the main and side wall painting. - 4th of November 2006 (Possibly 5th of Nov as well if paint-job cannot be completed in one day) Essential details: Contact person: Kar Lye - 012-2018829 C.K - 012-3852051 E-mail: info@raleighinternational.org.my Angels Children’s Home Address: 126, Jalan Hujan Gerimis 2, OUG, Off Old Klang Road Tel: 03-79832126) “I am only one; but still I am one. The Chronicles of 8 Part-time Thrash-Collectors.

0900
On one sunny Saturday morning, we started off with one car, and two Team Charlie members (CK and I). As planned, we did a door-to-door/ house-to-house collection at the area where we pre-distributed the flyers. With no idea of what to expect, we went knocking on the doors… well, not literally, we rang the doorbells, shouted (Helloooo…! Anybody homeeeee???), knocked the lock at the gate (for those without doorbells), get barked by dogs just to get attention from the person in the house. That desperate we were. However, to no avail, out of 15 houses, only 8 responded, and about 5, I would say, actually had something to give us. Some had newspaper, but claimed that they don’t (even though we can see it all stacked up at the side...). Some do have some newspaper and other scrap metals, but mostly the residence around that area is frequently visited by our day-rival: the paper-lama man (a man who collects recyclable items in a lorry)
Official state at that time: Annoyed, disappointed, upset, lost for ideas, burning hot, dripping with sweat.
1000
As CK’s kind friend, volunteered to help out for the day, I had to drive back to get her and another team member from KL Sentral. In the mean time, our one-and-only RIKL member volunteer came by to help out for the recycling day as well. (Due to unavoidable circumstances, last-minute notice was given out) Hopefully, this time around, the painting on Saturday will have better response from the large pool of members of RIKL. (PLEASE…?) My rough estimation: For one-day notice, one RIKL member, so, can I safely say for a 6-days notice, I can expect 6 RIKL members? Okay, back to my chronicle…
Fast-forward….
At 1130, we have a “larger” workforce; consist of an applauding amount of 6 people! *clap, clap*. We went on separate ways, one group lunch, while my car went around another area, targeting at flat this time around. Again, unsuccessfully, we tried a few houses, same result as the morning. We changed area AGAIN. This time I was trying to figure out where we were, got lost in the area (God knows where!), and then all of a sudden, literally got lost. Then fast-forward…. Ya-da ya-da….
While the other group, changed plan as well. They went to collect in big huge bungalows, where the owners have a store filled with loads of old newspapers.
Oh, while I was lost, we did manage to collect newspaper, and guess what? We went back with the whole car full of newspaper! (I was driving at 50 km/h)
Whole car full of newspapers
Lessons learned:
1) Always plan for the unexpected (“Paper-lama” man rounding every 2 hours to OUG);
2) It is OKAY to get lost once in awhile, you’ll never know;
3) Do not ever give up after the first try…or in our case we have second tries as well!
-Started raining at 3ish, so all workforces gather back at Angels Children’s Home.
We spent time with the kids, playing, talking… well, just basically hung out (?)
While we were waiting for the rain to stop…..
We were back to the serious stuff of collecting thrash from the neighbourhood, and now with a whooping “army” of SEVEN people!! Out we went to collect, and the results were quite satisfying, as we have learnt our lesson: target big huge bungalows. On, and on we collected, loaded, collected… until the cars were full. At about 1800, we headed back to the home. So, we unloaded the cars again and the result is….
Another whole car full of newspapers!!
More newspapers!!
I guess pictures speak a thousand words? So…
Half of Team Charlie IW Sept 2006 POSING!
Working till night…
Enough of pictures, get the idea, how much we did?
Wanna spend some time with the cutie super adorable children? (Check out for more details at the official website)
At the end of the day, I learnt not to underestimate our limited “workforce”. Besides, I realise how important recycling is, to the environment generally, and of course personally. (After collecting thrash for the past week, I expect myself to be a little more environmental-conscious). Just a little note to fellow helpful volunteers, from what I hear on the radio, 1 tonne of newspaper can save 70 trees; so my rough estimation for our Saturday (28th October 2006), fundraise + save-the-tree + help Angels Children’s Home mission, is very much well-accomplished. The least we know is that we save 105 trees from being cut. See? We benefited the environment as well. Public announcement to all: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle!
Lastly, a special shout-out to all who have helped: CK, Ling Ling, HL, Ezra, Christal, Wei Ming, and Adrian. Thanks for all the help!
Signing off with a sense of satisfaction, gratitude, achievement, and… (all the good feelings in the world!),
Kar Lye
